I am seeking information on Mary S. Ellison. She is the daughter of Alexander? Ellison and Rebecca Hope. She can be found in the 1870 Bradley County Tennessee census. She had a sister Louisa E. Ellison. After the death of her father, her mother married a J.R. Campbell. This family moved to Washington County Arkansas and can be found in the 1880 Census. Louisa also went to Washington County Arkansas and married Campbell T. Jones in May 1880. It is my belief that Mary S. Ellison remained in Tennessee. Any help would be appreciated.

I received a note from Sam N. Varnell of Maryville, TN who id’d a scan of the photo as the house where he was reared. He writes in part, “The photo is the house in Bradley County where I grew up. My grandfather, John Newton Varnell owned the house which was passed down to my father, Samuel Neil Varnell …” who added “a wide porch three-quarters around the house … My parents had five boys and we were all raised in the house which my mother named ‘Home Acres’…” He reports that the house passed out of the family after deaths of his parents, but that it is still standing. Glad to pass along a scan for descendants and others who might like one.

Thanks so much for this info. This is helping me tie a few family lines together. The George W. Barger (age 19 in the 1850 census) in my husband’s gg-grandfather. He married Elizabeth Randolph and their daughter Margaret Malinda(for her aunt!) Barger married Isaac Wesley Clouse in White County TN in 1878. What is interesting is that Riley is also used as a middle name is these families!

Augustus A. Brown
Posted By: Jo Tracey <ytfh138 [at] usa [dot] net>
Date: Friday, 9 March 2001, at 7:17 p.m.
My great grandfather Augustus Americus Brown, listed Bradley Co, Cleveland, TN as his birthplace when he enlisted in the Civil War in 1864. At the time of enlistment, he gave Ringgold, GA as his current place of residence.
A researcher in Catoosa County came across the following in the Catoosa 1860 Census note..
1860 Catoosa Co H. Brown age 45 NC// M 41 Tn// A.C. (F) 18 Tn// D.J (M) 16 Tn// E (M) 14// A.A. (M) 12// H.W. (M) 10// L (M) 8// J.C 4.
Does this family look familiar to anyone? A.A.(aged 10 in the 1860 Census) could have been an infant in the 1850 Census of Bradley County, or perhaps his parents and older siblings are listed. I just need some names to go with these initials if I am to go any farther. Thanks. Jo Tracey

Date: Sunday, 18 February 2001, at 9:31 a.m.
I am working backwards to trace the footsteps of my elusive great grandmother Saloma K. Whitecotton b. 1852 TN. In doing so, I find that she is connected with several families originating in Bradley Co TN: THOMPSON, HUGHES, NEWMAN, RIDDLE, MOUREY/MOWREY and WHITECOTTON. In the 1870 Christian Co Missouri census Saloma age 23 appears with old Joseph Thompson age 80 (probably her grandfather) some Hughes boys and her sister Sophronia Whitecotton age 19 in the household of a James and Siller (?) Mourey/Mowrey (probably her aunt and uncle) both in their 60s. In the 1860 Carroll Co Arkansas census, old Joseph Thompson, his wife Jane and many of the same people (but not Saloma or the Mowreys) appear in the same household. Working backward to Bradley Co TN 1850 census, I find most of the same Thompson/Riddle/.Newman/Hughs/Moureys living together or nearby.
I would like to correspond with anyone who is connected with these names in Bradley Co.

Fairbanks, born 1871 and 1902 in Tennessee. JAME T. then is possibly the son of John and Mary Jane Slaughter who appear in the Rhea County census of 1870. Looking for any links.
