Surnames from Sheriff’s papers & ?court records?
Posted By: Kim <kccode [at] earthlink [dot] net>
Date: Tuesday, 29 May 2001, at 3:09 p.m.
I’ve come into possession of some papers from a family member pertaining to my 4th gr grandfather who was sheriff of Bradley County. There are several surnames listed in the first page. The second page refers only to costs for transporting a prisoner.
1st page-
*State vs. William Bailey; Felony
*Spencer Beaver- Sheriff of McMinn County, TN
*Daniel Burk (evidently a witness)
*John Pit__ (evidently a witness) writing is hard to read..could be Pitsus or Pitm_?
Would be interested in hearing from any Bailey researchers with knowledge of this William Bailey. Goodspeed History lists a William Bailey-horse thief that served time.
From the papers, my 4th gr grandfather transported this person from Bradley County to McMinn County and left him in the custody of the Sheriff Spencer Beaver from July 30, 1836 to Sept 12, 1836. Two unnamed guards were present (unless my 4th gr grandfather was counting himself as one of the two). From the records it shows it was 52 miles traveled and Bradley County was charged by him ten cents per mile. Pay for the guards was 6 ?1/4 cents per mile. Cost of keeping him at McMinn jail was for 7 days listed as 37 ?1/2 cents per day (from the second page).

Carter update
Posted By: Kim <kccode [at] earthlink [dot] net>
Date: Wednesday, 23 May 2001, at 8:20 a.m.
One of the brick walls has come down in the search for the parents of my 4th gr grandfather, William Carter.
My cousin and I are in possession of a fairly detailed biography of William’s son, Charles L. Carter, M.D.
In the bio, it states, “Dr. Carter was born at Smith’s Crossroads (now Dayton), Tenn., March 1 1832, and is a son of William and Ruth (McFarland) Carter. His grandfather, James Carter, was of English ancestry and a native of Virginia.”
It goes on to say, “William Carter bought and sold horses and mules extensively, and though his father had formerly been in very affluent circumstances his estate went to pay security debts, and thus he was obliged to start anew. William Carter moved to Bradley County, Tenn., where he was elected sheriff, and where he died soon afterward. One of his deputies was appointed administrator of the estate and appropriated everything he could lay his hands on.”
The hunt begins anew. Anyone know of this JAMES CARTER or who this deputy might have been in Bradley County? Are there any records in existence from Smith’s Crossroads or were they destroyed by fire?

To my knowledge, and this from a Wrinkle researcher, the house that William Carter lived in was on Blythewood Stock Farm. It had been remodeled and now is used as a house for trainers working there.
Sorry I couldn’t be of more help. I’ve never been there and the only directions I have is what came from the Library, “The house is about 2 miles southwest from Cleveland, TN on the Blythewood Stock Farm.”

Searching for COOPER family that may have occupied the WILLIAM CARTER house in Bradley County, TN.
There was a photo taken of WILLIAM CARTER’S house by James Hancock, an amateur historian. According to the library, he often jotted notes on the back of his photographs. The following notation is on the back of the above mentioned photo: “William Carter was the first sheriff of Bradley Co and lived in this house. The Cooper family were some of his kinfolks and lived in this house for many years. The house is about two miles southwest from Cleveland, Tenn. on the Blythewood Stock Farm…”.
Any help very much appreciated in re these “kinfolks” named COOPER.

I am looking for information on my gggrandfather and grandmother, Joshua and Lucinda Dunkin. I don’t have a lot of information but this is what I have.
They lived in Bradley Co Tennessee in 1850 according to census records. They had the following children;Chesley H; James M; Elizabeth; Isaac Newton; Charity; and Russell. They are in the 1860 census in Walker Co. Ga. I am from Isaac Newton, all of our close relatives that we are aquainted with have passed on but one, Roy Trotter Duncan, a first cousin of my mother. If you have any information on this family it would be greatly appreciated.
Would especially like to know Joshua’s parents and siblings, as wellas Lucinda’s maiden name.
Thanks for your help

Charles Olan Jr.’s father was Charles Olan ROBINSON, Sr., who was possibly from the Cleveland or elsewhere in Bradley County. He married Bonnie Pauline DEVANEY. I would like to find out more about the ROBINSON side of my family, as I know nothing at present. I would be grateful for any information.

Tennesse area, last know to be in possesion of Ira Goins who passed away late last year. While in this area in June this year for our ALL Families Reunion, I will ask if its where abouts are know and try to get copies of it. Will be glad to share what I find, if found. I do have another of the center question……… Rebecah Dean…. any proof she is a Dean or maybe a Weatherly? We have good cases for either and very little proof of. Thanks

Sue, The links to both Bradley Co. newspapers can be found through the URL below. Just click here and you will be taken to the page containing both links. Also, there is the Chattanooga Times, [http://www.chattanoogatimes.com/]which is still in publication, and carries Cleveland and Bradley news.

This certainly sounds like the Mary Susan Ellison I am looking for. Although it looked as if her name was Margaret, I believe she can be found in the 1870 census with a black family by the surname of Cleveland. Along in the census with Mary/Margaret Ellison is Tennessee T. and Robert A. Campbell which are younger siblings by Mother Rebecca’s second marriage to J.R. (James R.) Campbell. The only child to be found with J.R. and Rebecca Campbell is the child Louisa E. Ellison, whom I believe to the the sister of Mary. If you think this is the same family plese write back. I feel that this Mary Susan Ellison is a missing link to my family. Thanks, Pam
SURNAME GRISHAM & STEELE

I have a copy of the 1900, Bradley Co. soundex for Grisham. There is a 8 year old girl by the name of Carrie Grisham, born April 1892, enumerated with a John Steele, who is the grandfather of the child. My gr grandfather was James Grisham, born Aug. 1878, died 1917 in James Co. Tn. The death certificate lists his father as William Grisham and his mother as Luvena Steele. I have been unable to locate her anywhere, but I am almost sure this John Steele is her father. I have no proof, just a gut feeling. Is there anyone out there that can shed some light on these families?
