Note: James C. Allen, son of James C. Allen and Elizabeth Gotcher Allen was born September 22 (this differs with the bible record), 1847 at Tyner in Hamilton County where he received his early education. Young James (not quite 16 years old) joined the Union Army (with his father) on August 5, 1863, at McMinnville, enlisting in Company H., 4th Tennessee Cavalry, and was promoted to Corporal during the war. Due to an intermittent fever, he was hospitalized at Jefferson, Indiana in November 1864, and again at Nashville where he was mustered out July 12, 1865. He married Minerva Jane Elder and had a large family of eleven children……(See births and marriages above). The family lived for some time in James County where he served as County Surveyor and Tax Assessor for several terms. He was postmaster at Long Savannah from 1889-93 and a charter member of the Long Savannah Cumberland Presbyterian Church where he became a Deacon and Elder in the church. Later, Allen moved his family to Bradley County and lived there for twenty-four years. His public service continued, he was elected as County Surveyor and was a member of the Bradley County Republican Executive Committee. He represented Bradley County in the Tennessee House of Representatives, 52nd General Assembly from 1901-1903. Allen was elected a Ruling Elder of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church at Pine Hill in the Lebanon District where he died February 16, 1920. He was buried in the Fort Hill Cemetery at Cleveland, Tennessee.
