TIPTON, William “Fightin’ Billy” – (d. 1849)
Died in Blount County, Tennessee, November 3rd, Mr. William Tipton. Mr. Tipton was born in Shenandoah County, Virginia, Feburary 13, 1761. He entered the service a mere boy, under Capt. Langdon, 1776, was at the siege and storming of Savannah, where he was severley wounded and left on the field all night, as dead. He is a brother to Capt. Abraham Tipton, who was under Col. Joseph Crockett, and who fell at Briargrass Creek, September 20, 1781, and also to Capt. Jacob Tipton, who raised a company of men in Green County, this state, and fell at St. Clair’s Defeat. Fought under his gallant father at the battle of Franklin, was in the Creek War under General Jackson, fought bravely at Pensacola, Talladega, Chicchopco, Enumclaw and Tohopeka, or Horse Shoe.

Are you sure the birth date is correct? His uncle was Major Jonathan Tipton (my 4x great grandpa). Jonathan was born in 1751. He was Colonel John Tipton’s brother. Correct me if I’m wrong, but that would put Colonel John as having William at a young age.
Hi Melinda – thanks for your comment! I transcribed this obituary exactly as it appeared, and from doing some brief searching, it seems as if John was born in 1730 and as it states in this obit from his time of death, William was born in 1761. This would mean his father was around 31 years of age. It also seems that John and Jonathan’s father (Jonathan) married at least 4 times and had children from 1728-1754 so this obit fits within that overall information. Of course, all info would need to be verified, but the obit matches up with what I’m quickly seeing. You’d probably want to check with more trusted Tipton researchers – perhaps you could post to one of the Tipton surname lists? Thanks!
