The following marriages were conducted Bledsoe County. Thomas Alexander Standifer is my grandfather, William Carroll Standifer is my great-grandfather, and Skelton Carroll Standifer is my great-great-grandfather. These dates are recorded in family records.
Thomas Alexander Standifer (26 Sep 1865 – 30 Jun 1931), son of William Carroll Standifer of Bledsoe County, married Sarah “Sally” Elizabeth Hitchcock (24 Jul 1870 – 17 Dec 1958), daughter of Loranzie Dow Hitchcock and Frances Ray York Hitchcock of Van Buren County on 2 October 1887 with James Hale officiating. James Hale owned property adjacent to the Skelton Carroll Standifer (father of William Carroll Standifer) and was pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church. The Skelton Carroll Standifer farm was on the Sequatchie River just north of the Sequatchie County line.
William Carroll Standifer (14 Jan 1846 – 22 August 1921) married Elvy Jane Austin (17 Nov 1847 – 9 Feb 1892) in 1867. She was the daughter of James and Susan Minton Austin of Bledsoe County. After Elvy’s death, William married Nancy Moffitt (1831-1931) on 12 Jul 1892. (Thomas Alexander was born before William was married. His mother was Elizabeth Epperson Jones.)
Skelton Carroll Standifer (12 Apr 1815 – 1903) married Nancy King (1813- 1899), daughter of Richard King, on 14 March 1830. (Skelton and Nancy raised their grandson, Thomas Alexander Standifer. They also had a son names Thomas Alexander Standifer who was born in 1851).
Skelton Carroll Standifer was the son of Congressman James Israel Standifer and Martha “Patsy” Standifer from Bledsoe County. (They were married in Knox County on 2 Feb 1801.)
