Monument to Nathan Bedford Forrest
Six Confederate Infantry companies were raised in Benton
County, TN and a seventh at Danville, then Stewart, later Houston
County. The men were mainly from Benton County and some from
Henry County, TN. Other individuals from Benton County served in
several companies.
The Confederates kept poor service records. Many of the muster rolls are not complete and just stop with a certain date. During the early part of the war some men thought their obligation was completed at a surrender and went home. Men often listed as deserters were sometimes lost from their company and took up with another company. Many were wounded and left on the battlefield to die or be captured. Still others were captured and taken to prison camps, where many died or took the U.S. oath of legion and returned home.
