King Hiram Caplinger
J.R. Williams Compapny, Unattached Calvary

King Hiram CAPLINGER was born around 1808 TN. He married Rebecca Elizabeth (Sarah/Betsy) KIRBY. "In December 1861, Captain R W Ayres organized a company at Danville, Tennessee. K H Caplinger on roster of this company. Most of the men of this company were from North Benton County and East Henry County. It was dismissed at the hasty evacuation of Corinth in the spring of 1862; after which it was mounted and known as Captain J R Williams' Tennessee Cavalry. Many of these men served to the close of the hostilities." (Historic Benton - 976.833 H2sk pg. 139).

In Families & Histories of Benton County, Tennessee, pg 91 we find: "On 20 Aug 1862 King Hiram joined the Confederacy for a 12 month tour. 22 Dec 1862 he was discharged by orders of Gen Braxton Bragg at Murfreesboro, TN. He was captured in Benton Co as a prisoner of war and died of pneumonia in General Hospital, Petersburg, VA. We have not found his grave". Family legend says he was almost home, ill with pneumonia, when he was captured.

King Hiram Caplinger's war record says he was captured in Benton County, Tennessee, January 24, 1863 and sent to City Point, James River, VA February 11, 1863. He died of pneumonia in the Petersburg, VA prison hospital February 24, 1963. More Information on King Hiram Caplinger

WILLIAM ROBERT HICKS
Company "C" Forty Sixth TN. Vol. Infantry

WILLIAM ROBERT HICKS the son of William Nelson Hicks and Rosanne ( ? WISEMAN? ) HICKS was born 06 February, 1837 in Henry County, TN , and died 09 June, 1928 in Benton Co Tn./ buried Pleasant Hill Methodist Cemetery. He married MAHALA M. MCCORD April 1861, daughter of WILLIAM Wilson MCCORD and FANNIE F. WRIGHT.

WILLIAM ROBERT HICKS: Was a Pvt. in Company "C" Forty Sixth TN. Vol. Infantry. enlisted Dec. 1861. under Col. Clark, Capt. John Harris, Frst. Lt. Bird Mc Kinney , second LT. Cal Pinson, thrd. Lt. Chas Kelly. At Shiloh he joined the 5th TN. Regiment under Col. Venerable. ( The 46th had been captured at Memphis) After the battle of Shiloh he was transferred back to the 46th.

He was in Battles at Jackson MS, Ft. Hudson LA., Murfreesboro, TN. Perryville KY. Was wounded in the battle of Perryville.

DAVID S. CUFF
55th TN Regiment Co. A & B

David Sylvester Cuff was born in Benton County TN 21 June 1840. He was married to Melissa Jane (Melissie) Florence in Benton County TN 13 October 1868 by R. W. Ayers. They had 4 boys and 6 girls (listed below). He enlisted n the 55th TN Infantry September 1861. He was disabled in battle at Atlanta. David Cuff died 20 September 1893 in Benton County TN and is buried in the Cuff Family Cemetery.
