Joseph Calvit ----- Lieut. Joseph CALVIT was born circa 1745 in either Craven County or Johnston County, North Carolina. Signer of the 1776 Watauga Petition, along with his brother, Frederick CALVIT. Joseph CALVIT served as a Lieutant with George Rogers Clark in the Illinois Regiment, Virginia State Line [1]. In 1830 Joseph's descendants applied for his Revolutionary War Pension. The applicants were daughter Martha (Patsy) CALVIT Clarke, her son Joseph Calvit Clarke and her brother John CALVIT. Her other two brothers James and Thomas were both deceased at this time. Those who signed the affidavits in witness for Martha, Joseph and John were: Ann TABER: of Port Gibson, Mississippi who lived with her family at a military post during the war. Margaret Williams: widow of Captain John Williams who served in the Illinois Campaign along with Joseph CALVIT. She said she "personally knew and [was] well acquainted with Lieut. Joseph CALVIT." Thomas COE: stated he was personally acquainted with Joseph CALVIT and was present at his death and burial. He also stated Marha CALVIT Clarke and John CALVIT were the only surviving legal heirs of Joseph CALVIT since his sons James and Thomas had died without issue. Zilpha CALVIT Perkins: who was his niece, daughter of Joseph's brother William and Phoebe CALVIT. [2] The above information was supplied to me by the book "Colvett Family Chronicles by Latayne Colvett Stanfill."
