NEBO CEMETERY
This is a large cemetery located on White Fern Road opposite Nebo Methodist Church. The cemetery is well maintained. It is somewhat difficult to estimate the number of unmarked graves here. The cemetery dates at least as early as the 1850s, and fieldstone would have been more common than carved markers at that time. But there are no fieldstones here. Like most old cemeteries still in use, fieldstones may have been removed to make moving the grass easier. There probably are unmarked graves is most of the open spots in the older parts of the cemetery (shown in the photograph above). In 1938 there were 118 "unmarked graves."
David Donahue recorded this cemetery January 16, 1999 and checked and updated it in March 2004. Two earlier records of this cemetery are available. Frances Evans recorded this cemetery for the Works Progress Administration on August 1, 1938. Her record appears in Tennessee Records of Henderson County, Bible Records and Tombstone Inscriptions (Nashville, Historical Records Survey, July 27, 1939). Her work is referred to as "Evans" in the notes below. She noted "118 unmarked graves." Debra Hinson, Anita Webb, and Mrs. James Whittle recorded the cemetery circa 1975. Their record appears in Henderson County, Tennessee Cemetery Inscriptions (R. H. Harris, Memphis, 1976, Vol. I, pp. 179-198. This is referred to as Hinson et al. in the notes below. The 1976 compilation seems to have included entries from Evans.
