The Obituary

MR. ROLAND CROWDER was born on March 6, 1904 in Holtsville (Hardin County), Tennessee. He was one of three sons born to the proud late parents Mr. Dave Crowder and Anna Holt Crowder. Two brothers preceded him in death, Guy Crowder surviving.

He received his early education in Holtsville, Tennessee and attended Tennessee Normal School (now Tennessee State University). He was among the first students of the late W. J. Hale. He often taught school in Decaturville, Tennessee where his father served as principal. He was devoted to so many things, for those whose lives he touched, who knew him, who loved him. Life goes on but it will never be the same.

He joined First Church of Deliverance on October 24, 1961 under the leadership of the late Rev. Clarence H. Cobbs. He served on Group #41 and then became a trustee of the church in which he served faithfully until his health declined him from attending regularly. He was a member of the Masons Fidelity Lodge #103.

He was also a Pullman Porter of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters Union. He worked for Northwestern Railroad Company. Later he served privately on the Illinois Central where he retired. He departed this life on November 17,1989 at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

He married Ethel Wingo on July 8, 1951 at St. Paul C.M.E.Church, no children were born to this union. Nonetheless, he wasn't afraid to get involved and help where he saw a need. He gave much and asked for very little.

Roland was affectionately called Jim. He loved life, people, and anything he could do for others whole hearted. He was a very humorous person, his spirit remained positive until his demise.

It seem that his time with us was short because we didn't want him to go, but his life was full and meaningful.

Mr. Crowder will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved him. He leaves to cherish his memory: his wife, Ethel; one brother Guy Crowder of St. Petersburg, Florida; one godchild, Jean Jacques Hunter; his cousin Dovie Brown of Cleveland, Ohio who was reared as his sister; a host of church family and friends.
