C., December 13, 1847; Scotch, Irish and English descent; son of <strong>John and Rhoda (Webb) HINDS<\/strong>; father was a physician and Cumberland Presbyterian minister; paternal grandparents <strong>Simeon and Elizabeth (Stone) HINDS<\/strong>, maternal grandparents <strong>Meredith and Rachel (Green) WEBB<\/strong>; educated Cumberland University, Harvard University and University of Berlin; graduated from Cumberland University with A.B., A.M. and C.E. degrees, June 1873; was made Honorary Ph.D. at Lincoln University, LL.D at Cumberland University; in early life he was a farmer and later taught school; married\u00a0 <strong>Mary B. Atkins LINDSLEY,<\/strong> November 21, 1880; 32d degree Mason and Knight Templar; member the American Chemical Society, the German Chemical Society, Fellow of American Association for Advancement of Science; member of Advisory Council Simplified Spelling Board; Professor of Physical Science Cumberland University 1873 to 1899; was Superintendent of Platform, Monteagle Assembly, 1891-98; Acting President Peabody College for Teachers, 1909-10; is now Professor of Chemistry University of Nashville and Peabody College, having held this chair since 1899; author of &#8220;The Use of Tobacco,&#8221; &#8220;Charles Darwin,&#8221; &#8220;Inorganic Chemistry,&#8221; &#8220;Chemistry by Experiment,&#8221; &#8220;Qualitative Analysis;&#8221; is also a contributor to numerous scientific and literary journals; member Presbyterian Church, having been Superintendent of Sunday School at Lebanon for twenty years.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><i>Source: Who&#8217;s Who in Tennessee: A Biographical Reference Book of Notable Tennesseans of To-Day<\/i>.
