{"id":8799,"date":"2013-06-25T08:00:19","date_gmt":"2013-06-25T13:00:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tngenweb.org\/whos-who\/?p=8799"},"modified":"2023-06-12T13:02:15","modified_gmt":"2023-06-12T18:02:15","slug":"carels-joseph-strineford","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tngenweb.org\/whos-who\/carels-joseph-strineford\/","title":{"rendered":"CARELS, Joseph Strineford"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">City: Nashville<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>CARELS, Joseph Stineford<\/strong>,\u00a0born in Philadelphia, Pa., Aug., 30, 1825; one of a family of sixteen;\u00a0graduated from Central\u00a0High School of Philadelphia, Pa.,\u00a0in 1843, received from it the degree of Master of Arts in 1851; moved to\u00a0Murfreesboro, Tenn., in 1845; he became a member of Mount Moriah\u00a0Lodge of Masons at Murfreesboro,\u00a0Tenn., in 1846; was made its\u00a0Worshipful Master in 1852; in 1857 he moved to Lebanon, Tenn., being\u00a0book-keeper and teller there in Bank of Middle Tennessee; in 1862 he presented to the\u00a0Secretary of the United States Navy a petition, endorsed by every Representative and Senator of the State for a position in the navy, and was appointed assistant paymaster; was attached to the steamer Clifton in Admiral Farragut&#8217;s West Gulf squadron, but at the end of one year was compelled to resign\u00a0on account of illness; moved to Nashville in 1863 and was made book-keeper and stamp clerk in the postoffice by <strong>A. V. S.
