E. bishop, of the diocese of Tenn.; born Jackson, Miss., Sept. 17, 1856; son of <strong>Major Frank M.<\/strong> and <strong>Charlotte (Moffett) GAILOR<\/strong>; Scotch-Irish descent; his father was born Western New York, Nov. 17, 1833, moved to Mississippi when a boy and became editor of a paper in Jackson in 1854, accepted a position on the Memphis Avalanche in 1857, and enlisted in the Confederate service under Gen. William Carroll; became captain and assistant quartermaster of the 7th regiment, and was promoted to rank of Major and quartermaster, Carroll&#8217;s brigade, Crittenden&#8217;s division; he was later made quartermaster of Wither&#8217;s division of Perryville, Oct. 8, 1862, while leading a successful charge of a regiment which he had rallied from disorder; <strong>Bishop GAILOR&#8217;s<\/strong> paternal grandparents were <strong>James<\/strong> and <strong>Charlotte (Langston) MOFFETT<\/strong>; graduated from Racine College, Wis., in 1876; General Theological Seminary, S. T. B., in 1879; S. T. D. Columbia, 1890; General Theological Seminary, 1893; D. D. Trinity College, 1892; University of the South, 1894; married <strong>Ellen DOUGLAS<\/strong>, daughter of <strong>G. W. CUNNINGHAM<\/strong>, Nashville, Tenn., Nov. 11, 1885; deacon, May, 1879; priest, 1880; rector Church of the Messiah, Pulaski, Tenn., 1879-82; elected professor of Ecclesiastical History, University of the South, in 1882; vice-chancellor same in 1890; declined Bishopric of Louisiana, in 1890; elected Bishop-Coadjutor of Tenn., in 1893 by unanimous vote, and accepted same; consecrated bishop July 25, 1893, and succeeded to bishopric of Tenn. on the death of <strong>Bishop QUINTARD<\/strong>, Feb., 1898; author; Manual of Devotion, The Apostolic Succession, The Divine Event of All Time, Things New and Old, The Trust of the Episcopate, The Puritan Reaction, the Master&#8217;s Word, and churches Act, Apostolic Order, Christianity and Education, The Episcopal Church and Other Religious Communions, The Fruitfulness of Sacrifice, The Communion of Saints.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>City:\u00a0 Memphis GAILOR, Thomas Frank, P.
