LAKE, Richard Pinkney<\/strong>, manager Equitable Life Assurance Society since 1885; born Grenada, Miss., Jan. 10, 1848; English descent; son of William and Clementine (Lake) LAKE<\/strong>; father’s occupation, merchant and capitalist; paternal grandparents Washington and Margaret (Slocombe) LAKE<\/strong>, maternal grandparents Major George and Mary Boyne (Slocombe) LAKE<\/strong>; educated Masonic Academy, Grenada, Miss.; in early life he was a merchant, planter and banker; married Stella McKnight HOFFA<\/strong>, Jan. 22, 1878; member A.F. & A.M., R.A. Chapter, Grenada, Miss., and K.T. Commandery, Memphis; member of Maryland branch Society of War of 1812, Sons of Revolution (Md branch), Business Men’s Club, Menesha Club, Memphis Historical Society U.C.V.; chairman and active member of Grenada Co. (Miss.) Democratic executive committee during reconstruction, 1874-1876; enlisted at age of 16 as Lieut. in Capt. Wynnes Co., Fisher’s regiment Mississippi Cavalry, under Forrest; disbanded same year; re-enlisted in Capt. G.P. Lake’s Co., Major Horton’s battalion and served as 2d Lieut. at age of 17, detached and in charge of dismounted men of Denie’s Cavalry Brigade, under Gen. Armstrong at surrender; served as staff officer on staffs of Gen. Stephen D. Lee and Gen. Clement A. Evans, U.C.V., now assistant quartermaster-general of U.C.V. on staff of Gen. George W. Gordon, Commander-in-Chief U.C. Veterans; one of the founders of Grenada (Miss.) College, about 1882; 1st president of Grenada Oil Mill; director and vice-president of Miss. & Tenn. R.R.
