Sept. 11 1848; English descent; son of <strong>John Thompson and Sarah Caroline (McEwen) JONES<\/strong>; paternal grandparents <strong>John and Annie (Scott) JONES<\/strong>, maternal grandparents <strong>Robert H. and Hettie (Kennedy) McEWEN<\/strong>; educated at Nottingham Academy, Tenn., University of Va.; graduated from medical department University of Va., M.D., July 1, 1861; entered the practice of medicine in early life; married <strong>Valerie WOOTEN<\/strong>, Dec. 23, 1873; Master Mason, DeSoto Lodge; member Shelby Co. Medical Society, American Assn., Memphis Country Club, Hatchie Coon Hunting and Fishing Club; Democrat; president of State Board of Medical Examiners ten years, president State Board of Health eight years president Board of Health City of Memphis, Tenn., eight years; surgeon Tenn. State Guards, with rank of Colonel; in 1898 was presented by the citizens of Memphis with a silver service as a free will offering and in 1905 he was given, by the citizens of Memphis a check for $10,000 in appreciation of his services as head of quarantine against yellow fever; member of Episcopal church.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>City: Memphis JONES, Heber, physician; born Phillip Co., Ark.
