ERSKINE, Alexander<\/strong>, <\/b>physician; born Huntsville, Ala., Sept. 26, 1832; Scotch-Irish (Presbyterian) descent; son of Alexander<\/strong> and <\/b>Susan Catherine (Russel) ERSKINE<\/strong>;<\/b> paternal grandparents, Michael<\/strong> and <\/b>Margaret (Hanley) ERSKINE<\/strong>; maternal grandparents, <\/b>Albert<\/strong> and <\/b>Ann Frances (Hooe) RUSSEL<\/strong>; <\/b>his maternal grandfather was a lieutenant-colonel in Revolutionary war; educated University of Virginia and completed several branches of study there; graduated from medical department of Columbia University, City of New York with M. D. degree March 6, 1858; entered practice of medicine at Memphis, Tenn., in 1858; enlisted as surgeon in C. S. A. in 1861, served until 1865, first in 15th<\/sup> Tenn. infantry under Col. Tyler, and later served in 2d Tenn. regiment under Col. Roberson, Lucius E.
