College; after leaving college in 1861 he went to Memphis, where he enlisted in <b>Capt. Phil D. Thompson\u2019s<\/b> cavalry company, which was placed in Breckenridge\u2019s brigade; he served with his company until after the battle of Shiloh, being honorably discharged for physical disability near Tupelo, Miss.; at close of war he settled in Memphis, studied law with Kortrecht &amp; Craft, and was admitted to bar in 1866, since which time he has practiced his profession in that city; in 1874 he formed a partnership with <strong>S. P. WALKER<\/strong>, and it continued for nearly twenty-five years; the firm was for many years legal counsel for the city of Memphis; after the death of <b>Judge Walker, Mr. METCALF<\/b> had his sons, <strong>Charles W. and William P.
