Shields, Maryland Line, was a soldier in the American army during Revolutionary war; son of <b>Malvinah<\/b> and <b>John COCHRAN<\/b>; father\u2019s occupation, farmer; paternal grandparents <b>John<\/b> and <b>Sarah (Smith) COCHRAN<\/b>, maternal grandparents <b>Preston<\/b> and <b>Hettie (Shields) JARNAGON;<\/b> in 1863 he enlisted in Capt. Marshall\u2019s company of cavalry, which served as escort to <b>Gen. Simon B. BUCKNER<\/b> until after the battle of Chickamauga; he was then detailed to the military court of\u00a0 Gen. Buckner\u2019s corps as orderly, and held that position for eight months; he also served with Lynch\u2019s battery in Va. And Tenn. until April 12, 1865, when is command was disbanded by Gen. Echols at Christianburg, Va., and was sent home without parole; shortly after reaching home he was arrested by the Federals as a deserter, and being without parole, was imprisoned for a month, his release being effected only by his taking the ironclad oath; educated at Holston College and Emory and Henry College of Va.; graduated from the Memphis Medical College, 1871; he entered practice of his profession at Bartlett, Tenn., and practiced there fifteen years, moving to Memphis in 1886; member of Tennessee Medical Assn., Tri-State Medical Assn. and Memphis and Shelby County Medical Societies; he is a Master Mason and a member of I. O. O.
