Institute; served in C.S.A. as private Co. &#8220;B,&#8221; 3d regiment infantry, Govan&#8217;s Brigade, Claibourn&#8217;s Division, Hardee&#8217;s Corps, Army of Tenn.; fought under Gen. Joseph E. Johnston and Gen. J.B. Hood, and surrendered with latter at Greensboro, N.C.; served twelve years in N.G.S.T., and held commissions as 1st Lieut. five years, Capt., three years, Colonel over four years, and is now Brig.-Gen., retired; also ex-Col. of the only Confederate regiment organized since the civil war; helped organize and for over 3 years commanded Co. &#8220;A,&#8221; C.V., of this city; began his business career as clerk in father&#8217;s office, later clerked in warehouse at Selma, Ala., and on Alabama river steamboats; married <strong>Jennie Garth McGARVEY<\/strong>, March 11, 1869; 1st vice-pres. Confederate Historical Assn., Memphis, Tenn., which is also Div. No. 18, &#8220;Confederate Soldiers of Tenn,&#8221; and Camp No. 28, U.C.V.; member of Business Men&#8217;s Club; Democrat; active member, a deacon and trustee of Central Baptist church, Memphis, Tenn., which he helped organize; was also clerk and treasurer for a number of years and superintendent of its Sunday school; was for three terms president of Baptist Shelby County Sunday School Convention; former vice-president and president of Memphis Board of Underwriters, serving two terms each; for a number of years was member of the firm of James T.
