R. <\/b>and Elizabeth (McBroom) CARTER; <\/b>his father was a merchant; paternal grandfather Armstead CARTER<\/b>, paternal grandmother Catherine (Hancock) CARTER<\/b>, maternal grandfather \u201cBarney\u201d McBROOM<\/b>, maternal grandmother Annie (Harding) McBROOM<\/b>; spent early youth on a farm; educated National Normal University, Ohio; taught school for eight years, first as Principal of Milton, Tenn., Seminary and later President of Elizabeth College, Petersburg, Tenn.; married Lena L. HAWKINS<\/b>, June 5, 1900; elected to State Senate from Nineteenth Senatorial District in 1907; Colonel on staff of Governor M. R.
