EAST, Joseph Richard, <\/b>carpenter, machinist; born Pittsylvania county, Va., March 2, 1845; son of Thomas <\/b>and Elizabeth (West) EAST<\/b>; father\u2019s occupation farmer, and for 25 years he was an old Va. overseer; paternal grandparents, Joseph <\/b>and Polly (Bell) EAST<\/b>, maternal grandparents, Joseph <\/b>and Catharine (McCaney) WEST;<\/b> enlisted in the Confederate army in 1863 at age of 18 as a private in Capt. Wm. BROWN\u2019s<\/strong> Company, and served until the close of the war; was wounded twice, first in the Battle of Fishers\u2019 Hill in the Valley of Va., in 1864; second in 1865 on the retreat from Petersburg to Appomattox being the last soldier to be wounded in the brigade to which he belonged; in early life he was a carpenter; married Sallee PETREE<\/b> July 25, 1873; member of F. & A.
