(Brakebill) RULE<\/strong>; father\u2019s occupation, farmer; paternal grandparents <strong>William<\/strong> and <strong>Mary (Kellar) BRAKEBILL<\/strong>; received common school education; married <strong>Lucy A. MAXEY<\/strong> Oct. 28, 1858; Republican; farmer; paternal grandparents, <strong>Michael<\/strong> and <strong>Elizabeth (Dill) RULE<\/strong>, maternal grandparents, <strong>William<\/strong> and <strong>Mary (Kellar) BRAKEBILL<\/strong>; received common school education; married <strong>Lucy A. MAXEY<\/strong> Oct 28, 1858; Republican; entered the office of \u201cKnoxville Whig\u201d in 1861; in 1862 enlisted in 6<sup>th<\/sup> Tenn. (Union) Vol. Infantry; promoted to non-commissioned staff, and in 1863 appointed adjutant with rank of first lieutenant, served as such until close of war, and was mustered out April 27, 1865; re-entered employ of \u201cWhig\u201d in 1866, and served as city editor until 1869; in 1870 began publication of \u201cKnoxville Daily Chronicle\u201d which was for many years the only republican daily paper published south of the Ohio river; he was one of its editors and publishers until 1882; in 1885 he started the \u201cKnoxville Journal\u201d and was editor of the same; he is now editor of the \u201cKnoxville Journal and Tribune; he was elected clerk of the country court of Knox Co., Tenn., in 1866, and again in 1870, resigned after one year of second term; in 1873 was elected mayor of Knoxville, Tenn., and the same year was appointed postmaster of Knoxville by Pres. Grant; he was re-appointed in 1877, and was postmaster for two full terms; in 1889 he was appointed U. S. Pension agent at Knoxville; in 1898 he was again elected mayor of Knoxville; he was a member of the Republican National Committee from 1876 to 1884, and was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1876; member of Methodist church.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>City:\u00a0 Knoxville RULE, William, editor; born Knox Co., Tenn., May 10, 1839; German descent; son of Frederick and Sarah E.
