MELLEN, George Frederick, <\/strong>educator, writer; born Pierce\u2019s Springs, Miss., June 27, 1859; English descent; son of Seth Smith<\/strong> and Susan Huntingdon (Bush) MELLEN<\/strong>; father\u2019s occupation, teacher, merchant; paternal grandparents, Jeremiah <\/strong>and Mary (Hastings) MELLEN, <\/strong>\u00a0maternal grandparents, Levi<\/strong> and Ann (Ayres) BUSH<\/strong>; educated by father at Pierce\u2019s Springs, Miss., and at Mt. Sterling, Ala., graduated from University of Ala., with M. A. degree 1879, and Leipzig University, Germany, Ph.D., 1890; in early life taught school at Gainesville, Livingston and Demopolis, Ala., later was Prof. of Greek, University of Tenn., 1891-1900; married Mary Briscoe BALDWIN<\/strong>, July 7, 1885; member of Irving Club, Knoxville, Tenn.; member of Tenn. Legislature, 1905-06; contributor to Methodist Review (Nashville), Methodist Review (N.Y.), New England Magazine, Sewanee Review; editorial writer and contributor, Knoxville Sentinel, and Chattanooga News; contributor to the South in the Building of the Nation, Vol. VII, chapters on New England\u2019s contributions to The South\u2019s Culture, The South\u2019s Contributions to the Nation\u2019s Wit and Humor, and Southern Editors; contribute to the Library of Southern Literature, Vol. I., Chapter on Joseph Glover BALDWIN<\/strong> with selections from The Flush Times of Ala. and Miss. contributor of Chapters II, III, IV, V, VI, VII and VIII, in William Rule\u2019s History of Knoxville, and to various periodicals; has farming and real estate interest in Ala. and Tenn.; stockholder in Holston National Bank, Knoxville; member M. E.
