(now Bland Co.), Dec. 14, 1841; Scotch-Irish descent; son of <strong>James <\/strong>and <strong>Elizabeth (Neel) HENDERSON; <\/strong>father\u2019s occupation, farmer; paternal grandparents <strong>John<\/strong> and <strong>Sarah (Bane) HENDERSON<\/strong>, maternal grandparents <strong>William<\/strong> and <strong>Nancy (Harman) NEEL;<\/strong> educated in the country schools and Friendship Academy; worked on father\u2019s farm until 1861, when he entered Confederate army, where he served four years in Co. D, 37<sup>th<\/sup> Va. Infantry, with rank of Orderly Sergt.; after the war he went to school until 1867; entered the mercantile business in 1868 and has been engaged in that business continuously ever since; was in retail business until 1905, when he entered the wholesale grocery business with his sons, in which they are engaged at Johnson City, Tenn.; married <strong>Melvina Ann POWELL<\/strong> Sept. 8, 1869; member of Catlett Lodge F. &amp; A. M., Gate City, Va.; 2d Commander McConnel Camp U. C.
