SAVAGE, George Martin<\/strong>, minister of the gospel and teacher; born Tishomingo Co., Miss., Feb. 5, 1849; son of Hamilton Giles and Eleanor Jane (Shields) SAVAGE<\/strong>; English-Irish and Scotch descent; father\u2019s occupation, minister of the gospel and farmer; paternal grandparents Martin and Elizabeth (Hudspath) SAVAGE<\/strong>, maternal grandparents George and Mary (McElhanan) SHIELDS<\/strong>; educated Ripley Star Institute, Henderson Masonic Institute and Union University, Murfreesboro, Tenn., graduated from the latter with degree of A. B. 1871, A. M. 1874, and LL. D. in 1890; in early life was a farmer; married Fannie Forrester WILLIAMS<\/strong> July 26, 1871; member Masons, Woodmen of the World and Conversation Club, Jackson, Tenn.; Democrat; member of the Baptist church; has been in the ministry since June, 1871; was Principal of Henderson Masonic Male and Female Institute 1871-7 and 1880-4; professor of English and French Southwestern Baptist University 1877-1880; Principal of Eagleville (Tenn.)
