TANSIL, Egbert E., <\/strong>farmer; born in Weakley Co., Tenn., May 11, 1839; English descent; son of Erasmus D.<\/strong> and Mary A. (Allen) TANSIL<\/strong>; father was a planter; paternal grandparents Edward<\/strong> and Piety (Thomas) TANSIL<\/strong>, maternal grandparents James<\/strong> and\u00a0 —–(Brasfield) ALLEN<\/strong>; educated at Hickory Grove (Tenn.) Academy and Cumberland University, Lebanon, Tenn., graduated from the later May, 1861, completed the law\u00a0 course; after his graduation he entered the Confederate service as Capt. Co. A. 31st<\/sup> Tenn. (Infantry) Regiment ; in 1862 he was made Col. of the regiment; after battle of Chickamauga was transferred to Gen. FORREST<\/strong> and assigned by him to command of Dept. of West Tenn., Southwest Ky. And North Miss.; after one year\u2019s service as Department Commander he was made Brig.-Commander, surrendering as Commander of Ala. Brigade at Gainesville, Ala., May, 1865; in 1865-6 he was engaged in the commission business, St. Louis, Mo., and in 1866-1872 New Orleans, La., in the same business; after leaving New Orleans he was in business in Nashville, Tenn.; became Gen. Deputy Collector for Ky. and Tenn. under Cleveland\u2019s first administration, and Sugar Inspector, New Orleans, La., during second term; married Jackie BELL<\/strong> Oct. 2, 1867; member Masons and Commandant John A. JENKINS<\/strong> Camp No. 998, U. C.
