TAYLOR, Alfred Alexander<\/strong>, farmer and lecturer; born Happy Valley, Tenn., Aug. 6, 1848; English-Scotch-Irish and German descent; son of Nathaniel G. and Emaline (Haynes) TAYLOR<\/strong>; father\u2019s occupation, Methodist minister and farmer; paternal grandparents James P. and Mary (Carter) TAYLOR<\/strong>, maternal grandparents David and Rhoda (Haynes) HAYNES<\/strong>; received academic education in the State of New Jersey; has devoted much of his life to farming and stock raising, and is now engaged in that industry; is a Republican in politics and has for years been active; member of the 51st<\/sup>, 52d and 53d Congress of the United States; in 1886 was the Republican candidate for Governor of the State of Tenn., and made the race against his brother, the Democratic candidate; they engaged in a series of famous joint debates, now known as the \u201cWar of the Roses;\u201d married Jennie ANDERSON<\/strong> June 22, 1881; member Masons, R. A. Lodge, Elks No. 825, Johnson City; he has devoted much of his life to lectures and at one time was associated with his brother, Gov. Robert L.
