JENKINS, James D.<\/strong>, insurance solicitor; born at Elizabethton, Tenn., Sept. 2, 1870; Welsh-German ancestors; son of Capt. David B. and Evelyn (Stover) JENKINS<\/strong>; father was a farmer who enlisted in the Federal army and after the civil war became internal revenue collector, later, trustee of Carter Co., Tenn.; educated at Davies Academy and at Milligan College in Carter Co., Tenn., and subsequently took a course at Union College, Schnectady \/sic\/<\/em>, N. Y.; began life as a teacher in the public schools of Carter Co., Tenn.; later served as a clerk in mercantile store, afterward was assistant cashier of the Carter Co. Bank for two years; he then engaged in the fire insurance business, becoming treasurer and general manager of the Elizabethton, (Tenn.) Insurance Agency (Inc); director of the Watauga Power Co., director\u00a0in the Whiting Mfg. Co., and served as treasurer of the city of Elizabethton, Tenn.; Republican and Prohibitionist, being an active member of the Anti-Saloon League, Carter Co., Tenn.; member Baptist church and has served in various capacities as clerk, treasurer and deacon of same for many years; served as clerk of the Watauga Baptist Sunday School Convention and as secretary of the East Tenn.
