Her great-great-grandfather,\u00a0<strong>Capt. Joseph HUNTER<\/strong>, who served in the Revolutionary War, came down the Ohio River with\u00a0<strong>Gen. George CLARK<\/strong>\u00a0and settled on Corn Island, opposite the present site of Louisville, Ky., taking part in the campaign that resulted in the conquest of the territory northwest of the Ohio River.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">On the acquisition of the Louisiana Territory, in 1803, her great-grandfather,\u00a0<strong>Joseph HUNTER<\/strong>, was appointed by\u00a0<strong>Thomas JEFFERSON<\/strong>, a member of the Territorial Council of Upper Louisiana. \u00a0Forty years before the Civil War,\u00a0<strong>Col. Abram HUNTER<\/strong>, her grandfather, was a prominent politician of Southeast Missouri. \u00a0Being a large slave owner, he was a pronounced Democrat of the Southern school, and took an active part in the proceedings of the Charleston Convention.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">When quite young,\u00a0<strong>Miss HUNTER<\/strong>\u00a0married\u00a0<strong>Hon. Rice A. PIERCE<\/strong>, of Union City, Tenn., who is serving his fourth term in Congress. \u00a0Five children were born of this union, two of whom survive \u2013\u00a0<strong>Thomas<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Rice PIERCE, Jr.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Mrs. PIERCE<\/strong>, when in Washington, always participates in the social functions connected with her husband\u2019s position. \u00a0She has won many friends in the capital city, and was among the invited guests to<strong>\u00a0Mrs. Potter PALMERS\u2019<\/strong>s grand entertainment given to a select party of Senators, Representatives, and their wives just before the opening of the Columbian Exposition. \u00a0She is an expert at chess, and has painted choice bits which have received high commendation, among which are \u201cOphelia at the Water\u2019s Edge\u201d and \u201cAngel Faces\u201d from Henry Newman\u2019s poem.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">While in Washington,\u00a0<strong>Mr. PIERCE<\/strong>\u00a0and his family make their home at The National, and no social function at that popular hotel is considered complete unless\u00a0<strong>Mrs. PIERCE<\/strong>\u00a0is present. \u00a0\u201dGreenlawn,\u201d their handsomely appointed suburban home near Union City, is noted for its hospitality, and many distinguished guests are entertained there by the genial host and his charming wife.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Mrs. PIERCE<\/strong>\u00a0has fine musical and literary taste, keeps abreast with the times, and is well posted on political questions. \u00a0She is a helpmeet to her distinguished husband in the capital city and at home in every way. \u00a0She is a Daughter of the American Revolution through her maternal great-great-grandfather,\u00a0<strong>Colonel ROSS<\/strong>, who fought in the War of the Revolution, and is also eligible as a Colonial Dame. The\u00a0<strong>Countess DUNHAM<\/strong>, of Paris, France, formerly\u00a0<strong>Miss Norma CHRISTMAS<\/strong>, of Louisville, Ky., is a cousin of\u00a0<strong>Mrs. PIERCE<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cGreenlawn\u201d is always the home of\u00a0<strong>Col. W. Jennings BRYAN<\/strong>\u00a0on his rare visits to Union City; and he likes to discuss political issues with his hostess, who wields a trenchant blade in arguing her side, for she does not always agree with the statesman in his views.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Mrs. PIERCE<\/strong>\u00a0keeps a carriage, and with characteristic kindness often places it at the disposal of friends less fortunate than herself, especially those who are convalescing from illness. \u00a0She is a consistent member of the Catholic Church.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Source:\u00a0Gilchrist, Annie S.\u00a0<i>Some Representative Women of Tennessee<\/i>.
