{"id":12812,"date":"2013-12-26T17:04:04","date_gmt":"2013-12-26T23:04:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tngenweb.org\/whos-who\/?p=12812"},"modified":"2023-06-15T21:43:09","modified_gmt":"2023-06-16T02:43:09","slug":"lurton-horace-harmon-mrs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tngenweb.org\/whos-who\/lurton-horace-harmon-mrs\/","title":{"rendered":"LURTON, Horace Harmon (Mrs.)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/tngenweb.org\/whos-who\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/LurtonMrsHorace.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-12813 alignleft\" style=\"border: 2px solid black;\" alt=\"LurtonMrsHorace\" src=\"https:\/\/tngenweb.org\/whos-who\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/LurtonMrsHorace-212x300.jpg\" width=\"212\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tngenweb.org\/whos-who\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/LurtonMrsHorace-212x300.jpg 212w, https:\/\/tngenweb.org\/whos-who\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/LurtonMrsHorace.jpg 376w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 212px) 100vw, 212px\" \/><\/a>Mrs. LURTON<\/strong>\u00a0was the daughter of the late\u00a0<strong>Dr. Benjamin Rush OWEN<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Mrs. Katherine Kennedy Howard OWEN<\/strong>, both of Lebanon, Wilson County, Tenn. \u00a0<strong>Dr. OWEN<\/strong>\u00a0was a learned and distinguished physician, who fell an early victim to his devotion to his professions, dying in early manhood from an attack of cholera, with which he came in contact in the line of duty. \u00a0<strong>Mrs. LURTON\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0mother was the daughter of\u00a0<strong>Jacob and Sarah Kennedy HOWARD<\/strong>. \u00a0<strong>Mrs. HOWARD<\/strong>\u00a0was the daughter of\u00a0<strong>Judge John KENNEDY<\/strong>, of Greenville, and a granddaughter of\u00a0<strong>Surgeon General Samuel KENNEDY<\/strong>, of the Revolutionary Army. \u00a0While\u00a0<strong>Mrs. LURTON<\/strong>\u00a0was still a young child, her mother married\u00a0<strong>James M. SAFFORD, Ph.D<\/strong>., then a professor in Cumberland University, Lebanon, and afterwards professor of geology for twenty-five years in Vanderbilt University, Nashville, and for forty years State geologist.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">On September 17, 1867,\u00a0<strong>Miss OWEN<\/strong>\u00a0became the wife of\u00a0<strong>Horace Harmon LUFTON<\/strong>, a young lawyer of Clarksville, Tenn. \u00a0<strong>Mr. LURTON<\/strong>\u00a0subsequently rose to distinction, filling at various times the places of Chancellor, Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of Tennessee, Chief Justice of the same court ; and in 1893 he resigned the latter office to accept an appointment from\u00a0<strong>President CLEVELAND<\/strong>\u00a0as a Circuit Judge of the United States in succession to\u00a0<strong>Judge Howell E. JACKSON<\/strong>. \u00a0<strong>Judge LURTON<\/strong>\u00a0is now the\u00a0presiding\u00a0judge of the Circuit Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. \u00a0In 1900 the University of the South conferred on\u00a0<strong>Judge LURTON<\/strong>\u00a0the degree of D.C.L.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Four children were born to\u00a0<strong>Mr. and Mrs. LURTON<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 two boys and two girls. \u00a0Of these,\u00a0<strong>Leon Owen LURTON<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Katherine Howard LURTON<\/strong>\u00a0are dead. \u00a0<strong>Mary LURTON<\/strong>, the surviving daughter, has been twice married. \u00a0Her first husband,\u00a0<strong>Robert J. FINLEY<\/strong>, died a little more than one year after their marriage. \u00a0In April, 1902, she married\u00a0<strong>Hon. Horace Van DERVENTER<\/strong>, of Knoxville, Tenn., where the young couple now reside. \u00a0<strong>Horace H. LURTON, Jr<\/strong>., the surviving son, is at present secretary to his father as Judge of the Court of Appeals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Being descended from Revolutionary soldiers on both her paternal and maternal sides,\u00a0<strong>Mrs. LURTON<\/strong>\u00a0has taken much interest in the Daughters of the American Revolution, and is now regent of Campbell Chapter, Nashville. \u00a0She is a devoted Christian woman and an earnest member of the Episcopal Church. \u00a0Through her marriage to\u00a0<strong>Judge LURTON<\/strong>, who was a confederate soldier, and her relation to others who wore the gray,\u00a0<strong>Mrs. LURTON<\/strong>\u00a0is an active and interested member of the Daughters of the Confederacy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In addition to the patriotic societies mentioned,\u00a0<strong>Mrs. LURTON<\/strong>\u00a0has long been a member of the Hermitage Association, a society of the first ladies of the State, who have devoted themselves to the care preservation of the Hermitage, the venerated home of\u00a0<strong>General JACKSON<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In addition to membership in a number of purely social clubs,\u00a0<strong>Mrs. LURTON<\/strong>\u00a0has exhibited her interest in education and general culture by her membership in the Vanderbilt Ladies\u2019 Aid Society, the Craddock Circle, the Review Club, and the Philharmonic Musical Society. \u00a0Ever interested in every good work, she has long been a manager of the Nashville Woman\u2019s Exchange.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Though\u00a0<strong>Mrs. LURTON<\/strong>\u00a0has ever regarded her duties as a mother, wife, and home keeper as commanding her first service, she has not been unmindful of her social duties; and in the society of Nashville no one is more regarded for refinement and culture and all other womanly graces than the subject of this sketch.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Source:\u00a0Gilchrist, Annie S.\u00a0<i>Some Representative Women of Tennessee<\/i>.
