SMITH, Baxter<\/strong>, <\/strong>attorney at law; born Davidson Co., Tenn., March 10, 1852; English descent, son of Edmund Byars<\/strong> and Sally (Baxter) SMITH<\/strong>; father was a physician; educated in Cumberland University; entered the practice of law in early life; married Bettie GUILD<\/strong>, May 15, 1856; member of Knights of Pythias; entered the Confederate service as Capt. In Sumner Co., Tenn., in 1861, promoted to Major, Lieut.-Col. and Colonel commanding brigade at close of war in 1865, and served a short while as Inspector General; Democrat; former Senator in State Legislature from Davidson and Wilson Counties, Tenn.; Asst.
