Tenn., March 7, 1846; son Lewis<\/strong> (deceased) and Margaret (Donohoo) SHEPHERD<\/strong>; English-Irish descent; educated Aldchoff\u2019s Institute Hamilton Co.; left Aldchoff\u2019s 1861 to join Confederate Army at age of 15 years; member Masons (Royal Arch, Templar and Shriner); representative in State Legislature 1877-78-90-91 (two terms); special judge of Chancery and Circuit Courts 1886-88; author of newspaper articles on historical events; member Co., A Fifth Tenn. Cavalry in Confederate Army; participated in all campaigns and battle of Gen. FORRESST<\/strong> in East Tenn.; principal engagements Battle of Chickamauga, Tunnell Hill, Dalton; he was taken prisoner of war in 1864 and released Feb. 28, 1865, and participated in battle of Bentonville, N. C., under Gen. Joe E. JOHNSTON<\/strong>; served in escort of President DAVIS<\/strong> in his attempt to flee the country; admitted to bar in Ringgold, Ga., Aug. 1867; in 1870 he moved to Chattanooga to practice law; presidential elector for Pres.
