SMITH, John Powell, <\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span>lawyer, Governor Mountain Branch National Home for D.V.S.; born at Mountain City, Tenn., March 30, 1846; Scotch-Irish and English-French descent; son of <\/span><\/span><\/span>Alexander Doran <\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span>and<\/span><\/span><\/span> Mary Ann (Powell) SMITH<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span>; father’s occupation lawyer; paternal grandparents <\/span><\/span><\/span>Caleb <\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span>and<\/span><\/span><\/span> Elizabeth (Doran) SMITH<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span>, maternal grandparents <\/span><\/span><\/span>John <\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span>and <\/span><\/span><\/span>Nancy (Steele) POWELL<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span>; educated in common schools and private school of Rev. James Keyes, Johnson Co., Tenn.; married twice, first<\/span><\/span><\/span> Mary CRAIG<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span>, Feb. 7, 1867, second<\/span><\/span><\/span> Florence B. ALEXANDER<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span>, Jan. 1, 1895; master Mason; Republican; assistant U.S. Atty. E. District Tenn. Dec. 1, 1880 to July 1, 1885; Chancellor 1st Division Tenn. Sept. 1, 1886 to Sept. 1, 1902, served as private corporal, sergeant, and second lieutenant, Co. “B.” 4th regiment Tenn. Vol. Infy. June 3, 1863 to August 2, 1865; in early life he practiced law; since April 15, 1903 he has been Governor Mountain Branch, National Home for the disabled volunteer soldiers; elder of Second Presbyterian church, Jonesboro, Tenn.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
