WILCOX, David Powell, minister of the gospel; born Unicoi Co., Tenn., June 8, 1830; Scotch-Irish descent; son of John and Letitia (Silson) WILCOX; paternal grandparents James and Mary (Doan) WILCOX, maternal grandparents Steven and Mary (Pierce) SILSON; received common school education and in early youth was a saddler and harness maker; married Lucy Janes LUTTRELL Dec. 25, 1849; wife was descendant of Randolph and Lee families, Va.; Democrat; at one time made the race against Hon. A. A. TAYLOR as Democratic nominee for Congress; was Postmaster under Andrew Johnson and has formerly held the offices of Marshal, Alderman and Mayor of Elizabethton; was at one time Justice of the Peace and Tax Assessor; entered the Union army in 1861 as private, wounded in 1863, promoted to First Sergeant, then First Lieutenant, then Captain of Militia; formerly engaged in merchandise and trading and is now a minister of the gospel of the M. E. church, South.
