WHITE, John A., educator; born in North Carolina; Scotch-Irish descent; son of William WHITE; was left an orphan at age of twelve; moved to Johnson City, Tenn., at age of sixteen and secured a position in brick yard at 50c a day, was encouraged to enter school and enrolled in the 4th grade in Johnson City Institute at age of 17, remained in that school three years, afterward entered King’s College, Bristol, Tenn., three years there, then entered Peabody College, Nashville, Tenn., is now Superintendent of Public Instruction for Lewis Co., Tenn.; married Katie May WOOD Sept. 14, 1899; member I. O. O. F.; Democrat; member of Baptist church and Deacon in same.
