TONEY, J. Frank, merchant and real estate dealer; born Carter Co., Tenn., March 13, 1859; son of William and Evaline (Price) TONEY; father’s occupation, farmer; paternal grandparents William and Mary (Mattox) TONEY, maternal grandparents Christopher and Mary (McInturff) PRICE; was left an orphan at 10 in reduced circumstances; began his career as a farmer at ten years of age, later became a clerk in store; member of the firm of Tucker-Toney Co., doing a mercantile business at Erwin, Tenn., also Toney & McNabb, dealers in real estate at the same place; stockholder in each of the two banks located at Erin; established in 1890 and still owns “The Magnet,” the only newspaper in Unicoi Co., Tenn.; married Fannie MILLER; Republican; former County and Circuit Court Clerk of Unicoi Co., and was representative in the State Legislature 1897-8; was Deputy Collector of Internal Revenue under each of McKinley’s administrations; member of Bapist /sic/ church.
