STEEN, John M.

City: Memphis

STEEN, John M., lawyer; born Rankin Co. Miss., in 1860; received his primary education in local schools of Rankin Co., Miss., and graduated from the University of Mississippi in 1885; he taught as adjunct professor in the university for the following year, and at the end of that time he was elected superintendent of the city schools at West Point, Miss., where he remained two years; he then entered the law school at Lebanon, Tenn., and graduated with the class of 1887; soon after graduation he settled in Memphis, and engaged in the practice of law; he was for two years assistant attorney for Shelby county and has served on the Memphis Board of Education; he has been active in politics and has been delegate to several state conventions; he is also interested in planting in Arkansas.
