MINNIS, Samuel Young, attorney at law; born Madisonville, Tenn., Dec. 8, 1843; Irish descent; son of James Pickens and Keturah Sophrony (Cheyne) MINNIS; paternal grandfather Samuel MINNIS; paternal grandmother Mary (Pickens) MINNIS, maternal grandfather Abel R. CHEYNE, maternal grandmother Easter (Thompson) CHEYNE; received common school education; married Martha CALFIE Oct. 8, 1867; member Masonic Lodge, having filled all places in the Blue Lodge at Madisonville and has been Secretary for the last fifteen years; Republican; postmaster Madisonville 1898-1902; Justice of the Peace Monroe County thirty-six years; private in C.S.A.; fought throughout the siege of Vicksburg; was a blacksmith in early life and from the age of eleven, his father being dead, had upon him the care of his mother and four children, whom he helped to support until he went into the army; he is now engaged in the practice of law at Madionsville [sic], Tenn.
