GAMBLE, maternal grandmother Elizabeth (Ramsburger) GAMBLE; Scoth-Irish descent; educated common schools and Maryville College; married first, Mary T. WILSON, Oct. 16, 1876; second marriage, Lucy M. WILSON, Aug. 12, 1903; member Masonic Lodge; held office of Circuit Court Clerk of Blount Co. from 1868 to 1878; U.S. Commissioner 1878-1896; member of Legislature 1881-2; father’s occupation, farmer and blacksmith; member Co. A 3d Tenn. Calvary, U.S. Vols, 2d Lieut same Co., Adjutant same regiment: at age fourteen years, father placed him in country store, where he remained until the outbreaking of the civil war; his people held to the Union; in July 22, 1862, ran off from home, making his way to Union army at Cumberland Gap, where he enlisted Aug. 10, 1862; was in the retreat from Cumberland Gap to the Ohio river in Sept. and Oct., 1862; remained in service to close of war; was given a commission as Major and was mustered out Aug. 3, 1865; Elder in New Providence church, Presbyterian U.S.A.
