McCALL, Joseph William, physician, born Jan. 20th, 1832; Scotch-Irish descent; son of Andrew and Jeannette (Todd) McCALL; father’s occupation, educator and farmer; paternal grandparents, John and Jane (Proctor) McCALL; maternal grandparents Patrick Todd and Jane (Cormichael) TODD; paternal grandfather was Lieut in the Revolutionary War; educated at Decaturville, Tenn., Academy; graduated in Medical Department University of Nashville, degree M. D. 1857 and College of Physicians and Surgeons, City of New York in 1869, with the degree of M. D.; began his business career as clerk in a dry goods store and entered the medical profession in 1857; he esteems with the greatest value an article written by him on malaria and published in the Nashville Journal of Medicine and Surgery Sept. 1878, two years before Lavern made known his famous discovery, from a priori reasoning the cause of malaria must be a parasite having a regular evolution of life like other vegetable life (see article); married Victoria A. WILSON June 16th, 1858; a Mason; member of the American Medical Association; was assistant treasurer of the 7th Regiment, Tennessee Cavalry Volunteers, Civil War, U. S. A.; president of the U. S. Examining Pension Board of Surgeons.
