LIVINGSTON, Henry J., lawyer; born Orangeburg district, S. C., Feb. 20, 1834; son of Thos. P. and Rachel (Schuler) LIVINGSTON; English and Scotch descent; graduate of Lebanon Law School in 1857; married Tempe Jones SOMERVILLE, Nov. 28, 1872; in Confederate army ’61-65; went in as Lieutenant Co.. D., 7th Tenn. cavalry; served in company till war closed; under Gen. Forrest at Gainsville, Ala., Harrisburg and Bryce’s Cross Roads; with Gen. Forrest at Johnsville, captured steamboats, battle of Corinth, Columbia; wounded Nov. 26, 1864; appointed chancery judge by Gov. Brown Aug., 1872; served on bench until Sept. 1894; appointed once by Gov. Bate, and elected four times; in case of State of Tennessee vs. M. & O. R. R. taxation was granted a decree against railroad; appealed, taken to Supreme Court of U. S. A., and reversed by a divided bench, five being in favor of reversal and four in favor of affirming; Democrat.
