HOWSE, Hilary Ewing, public official; born in Rutherford Co., Tenn., Jan. 25, 1866; reared on farm; at age of eighteen years he went to Nashville, and went to work in a mattress factory, and put in time on piecework at night to help support his younger brothers and sisters; later he became owner of the firm of Howse Bros., stockholder in the Broadway National Bank, stockholder in the Anchor Spring & Bedding Co., and also a stockholder in the Nashville Interurban Railway; his political career began with his election from the First District, to the County Court where he served five years; he was elected to the State Senate in 1905, re-elected in 1909, he was afterwards elected Mayor of Nashville over strong opposition by a large majority; he is a member of Elks, Eagles, Knights of Pythias, Red Men, and Junior Order United American Mechanics; he has held many responsible positions in these orders and is now one of the trustees of the National Junior Orphans’ Home, Tiffin, Ohio.
