HAYES, HENRY CLAY, farmer and trader; born in Grainger Co., Tenn., Aug. 23, 1872; English and Scotch-Irish descent; son of James Madison and Sarah (Godwin) HAYES; father’s occupation farmer and stock trader; educated at Tazewell, Rutledge and Jefferson City, Tenn.; in early life taught school; later entered the mercantile business; now engaged in farming, stock raising and trading at Idol, Tenn.; married Nannie ROSE Dec. 7,1899; Democrat; member of the Missionary Baptist church
