DUCKWORTH, William Lafayette, minister of the Gospel; born Haywood Co., Tenn., June 29, 1834; Scotch-English descent; son of William Wilkins and Mary Mahala (Alexander) DUCKWORTH; father’s occupation farmer; paternal grandfather Robert W. DUCKWORTH, paternal grandmother Elizabeth (Alexander) DUCKWORTH; maternal grandfather John ALEXANDER, maternal grandmother Sarah (Shelby) ALEXANDER; graduated University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia (Pa.) M. D. 1866; member Masons; married T. P. CAPELL Dec. 1867; served four years in the war between the states, Second Lieutenant, First Lieutenant, Major, Lieutenant-Colonel, and Colonel Seventh Tennessee Cavalry, C. S. A.; elected to Second Lieutenant and Major by his comrades, promoted to First-Lieutenant and Lieutenant-Colonel by Brig.-Gen. James R. Chalmers, commanding First Cavalry division of Forrest’s cavalry corps; once wounded, once captured, both in action, 1867 [sic]; also captured Union City, Tenn. March, 1864; promoted by complimentary order for gallantry on the field in 1863; nominated for Brig. Gen. by Division Commander but declined to make application; surrendered with Regt. 7th Tenn. Co. and paroled May 12, 1865; member of M. E. Church, south; received the appointment of presiding elder seven times and administered that office over three districts of Memphis (Tenn.) annual conference; in early life worked on a farm and taught school.
