CLINE, Josiah S., educator; born near South Bend, Ind., Oct. 15, 1854; German-Irish descent; son of Samuel and Mary E. (Morris) CLINE; father was a mechanic, miller and merchant; educated in common schools of Indiana and at Valparaiso, where he graduated with degrees of B. S., B. A. and A. M. in 1882; has at times been engaged in carpentering, farming, milling and merchandising; entered educational work in 1873, and taught and attended school until his graduation in 1882; taught school in Illinois, Iowa and Nebraska for many years and during school vacations worked at other things; was superintendent of public schools of Wepello, Iowa; moved to Tenn. in 1890; since moving to Tenn. has been engaged in mining, milling, manufacturing and merchandising, besides teaching in institutes and engaging in agricultural enterprises; has been County Superintendent of Cumberland Co. most of the time for the past fifteen years, and is the present incumbent; has extensive timber and mineral interests in Cumberland Co., Tenn.; largely interested in real estate in Crab Orchard, Tenn., and is the owner of farm lands nearby; married Lillian SWEENEY, Wepello, Ia., June 5, 1890; member of Church of United Brethren; F. & A. M., I. O. O. F. and Encampment of Red Men; has filled principal offices in local lodges of all orders with which he is affiliated.
