CARRUTHERS, Albert B., business man; born Memphis, Tenn., in 1862; son of J.S. and Fanny L. CARRUTHERS; father’s occupation, cotton expert; educated in the public schools of Memphis, Tenn.; at age of thirteen years he entered the employ of Lowenstein Wholesale Dry Goods Co., as cash boy, and soon after became office boy for Katzenberger Bros., brokers and bankers, with whom he remained several years; he then took a place with Meacham & Co., wholesale grocers and cotton factors; when nineteen years of age he went to Tipton Co., Tenn., and in company with a partner opened up a small general store; at the end of 14 months he sold out and went to Clarkdale, Miss., where he opened a general store; he remained there five years, and lost his store by fire; he then went to Memphis and helped organize the Carrington Shoe Co., a wholesale shoe house, of which he was made treasurer; this firm continued until 1893, and was succeeded by Johnson, Carruthers & Rand; in 1898 it became the Carruthers-Jones Shoe Co., of which he is president; he was former president of the Memphis Credit Assn., and in 1902 he was elected a member of the Memphis city council, re-elected in 1904; married Janie L. LEAVELL in 1885; member of the Evergreen Presbyterian church, Memphis, Tenn.
