BURNETT, Jesse McGarity, educator, minister of the gospel; born Del Rio, Tenn., Aug. 29, 1870; English descent; his ancestors came into this country in early colonial days, a great uncle was killed in battle of Kings Mountain, N. C.; son of Jesse M. L. and Henrietta Sarah (Cody) Burnett; father’s occupation, minister of the gospel; paternal grandparents Swann and Frances (Bell) BURNETT, maternal grandparents, Edmund and Sarah (Henderson) CODY; graduated from Richmond (Va.) College with degree A. B. 1891, Southern Theological Seminary, Louisville, Ky., 1894, received degree D. D. from Carson and Newman College; married Lucile PHILLIPS Oct. 6, 1907; Independent Democrat; member of the Baptist church; professor of Greek in Carson and Newman College, Jefferson City, since 1894, also in recent years has preached to neighboring churches.
