ALLEN, James, farmer and stock raiser; born near Greeneville, Tenn., March 27, 1855; Scotch-Irish descent; son of James and Laura M. (Brown) ALLEN; paternal grandparents Daniel and Mary (Baker) ALLEN; maternal grandparents Peter and Sarah (Foster) BROWN; educated at Morristown, Tenn., and Emory & Henry College, Va.; has been interested in farming and stock raising all of his life; married Elizabeth Jay BIRDWELL July 1, 1884; Democrat; Trustee of Greene Co., Tenn., from Sept. 1896 to Sept. 1909; Represented Greene Co., in the 53d and 54th General Assemblies of Tenn.; appointed Election Commissioner three times; at present Chairman of the Demo. Ex. Com. of Greene Co., Tenn., which position he has held a number of times; his ancestors were among the first settlers of Greene Co., Tenn.; the first County court was organized and held in the home of Robert CARR, his great-grandfather about the year 1783; member of the Southern Presbyterian Church.
