READ, Samuel P., banker; born Nelson Co., Ky., Feb. 10, 1831; English and French descent; son of William and Anne (Bealmear) READ; educated St. Joseph’s College, Bardstown, Ky., finishing the entire regular course except in Greek; began his career as clerk in store, and entered mercantile business for himself at Memphis, Tenn., in 1857, continuing in same until 1865; was cashier of the Union & Planters Bank from its beginning in 1869 until 1897, when he was elected president which office he is yet holding, the name of said bank having been changed into that of the Union & Planters Bank & Trust Co.; chairman of commission in charge of Goodwyn Institute of Memphis, director in Cossitt Library; married Susan HAY, March 4, 1852; member Masons (K.T.) and Business Men’s Club; Democrat; member of Presbyterian church.
