STONE, Eli Newbern, real estate dealer and public official; born Madison Co., Tenn., Sept. 20, 1847; English and Scotch-Irish descent; son of Clark L. and Margaret (Anderson) STONE; fathers’ /sic/ occupation, farmer, merchant; maternal grandfather Eli ANDERSON, paternal grandfather Uriah STONE; entered Confederate service at age of 16, as member of 18th Miss. Battalion, transferred just before close of war to 7th Tenn. Cavalry; attended school at West Tenn. College, Jackson, Tenn., one year; married twice, first, Hattie LOWRY, daughter of Col. Robert LOWRY and sister of ex-Gov. LOWRY of Miss., in 1870, second, Elizabeth PRIEST, Sept 20, 1873; member of Knights and Ladies of Honor; was in the dry goods and general merchandise business for 25 years; former Mayor of Milan, four years, and Justice of the Peace of Gibson Co., Tenn., 28 years; member of Legislature, 1897-1901; Representative four years Supreme Lodge K. & L. of Honor; at present engaged in the real estate business and is Justice of the Peace.
